tnAchieves now accepting applicants, mentors for upcoming year

As many high school seniors begin to prepare for college, one local scholarship program is gearing up for a higher number of applicants this year.

"tnAchieves" provides assistance to public school students who continue their education at a community college. In East Tennessee, those schools include Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, and Walter State Community college.

The "last dollar" scholarship provides funds to cover whatever tuition costs remain after financial aid and other scholarships.

The Cumberland County Board of Education will vote on changes to their current corporal punishment policy Thursday night.

Currently, principals send paperwork home with students the first week of school concerning the policy.  Guardians must check "yes" or "no" on whether they approve of corporal punishment for their child, if actions warrant.

The new change would place full responsibility on parents.  Students would no longer carry the form home.
