Man arrested for fatally shooting girlfriend

Cumberland County authorities have detained a Crossville resident in the shooting death of his girlfriend.

They are in the process of booking Matthew Howard, who will be charged with first degree murder, officials said.

"It is early into the investigation and little information can be released at this time, but investigat

ors are currently investigating this case as a homicide," Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox said.

Officials said Howard, 39, called 911 around 3:05 a.m. Monday and told operators that he had shot his girlfriend Tara Burnett, 33.

Authorities arrived at the couple's Kings Down Drive home in the Fairfield Glade community about 10 minutes later and found Burnett dead from a gunshot wound.

She will be taken to the State of Tennessee Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Howard's bond has been set a $1 million. He is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.
